The Probus Club of Newbury

From the archives

For this month’s trawl through the cobwebs of time we go back to July 2008 just as
Ian Cameron was handing over the reins of Chairmanship to Peter High at the AGM.
The Chairman’s review at the AGM reported that the Club had organised trips to the
Houses of Parliament, Wales and Germany. Clearly some quality planning there from
Bob Leman and Dick Godfrey. The age profile of the membership was from 64 to 95
years with a mean of 77 years.
The walk was from the Swan at Great Shefford and was six miles: members must
have been fitter in those days !.
The Newsletter recorded some genuine complaints to a local council (in the days of
councils owning houses for rent), including such gems as:
‘I want some repairs done to my cooker as it has backfired and burnt my knob off’
‘It’s the dogs mess that I find hard to swallow’
‘50% of the walls are damp, 50% have crumbling plaster, and 50% are plain filthy’
‘My bush is really overgrown round the front and my back passage has fungus growing in it’
